REFLEXOLOGY: WHAT DOES IT HAVE TO DO WITH DIABETES?
By Sharon S. Joag, DPM
Reflexology is a practice which has been around for thousands of years. It is a practice of applying pressure to certain points on the foot, and in the end to achieve balance and relaxation.
Many parents have started to bring their children in for reflexology treatments. Kids usually show quick results and often only need short 15-20 minute treatments once or twice a month.
Reflexology has been proven to increase activity in sedentary children, and those children who are overweight and have a tendency to develop Type II Diabetes. It has also been shown to advance behavior and communication skills in children.
Gentle pressure applied to various pressure points in the foot can aid in insomnia, bed wetting, constipation, teething, allergies and digestion. Today, we have an increasing number of children who are overweight and who have pre-diabetes or who are diabetic. This modality is a good way to start your child in the right direction and to introduce an alternative treatment which will aid in increasing their daily physical activity, which is really KEY to overcoming Diabetes.
